我早料到你讀了《論希臘雕塑》以後的興奮。那樣的時代是一去不復返的了,正如一個人從童年到少年那個天真可愛的階段一樣,也如同我們的先秦時代、兩晉六朝一樣。近來常翻閱《世說新語》(正在尋一部鉛印而篇幅不太笨重的預備寄你),覺得那時的風流文采既有點兒近古希臘,也有點兒像文藝復興時期的意大利;但那種高遠、恬淡、素雅的意味仍然不同于西方文化史上的任何一個時期。人真是奇怪的動物,文明的時候會那麼文明,談玄說理會那麼雋永,野蠻的時候又同野獸毫無分別,甚至更殘酷。奇怪的是這兩個極端就表現在同一批人同一時代的人身上。兩晉六朝多少野心家,想奪天下、稱孤道寡的人,坐下來清談竟是深通老莊與佛教哲學的哲人! 一九五六年七月一日晚七時大香蕉av 記得你在波蘭時期,來信說過藝術家需要有single-mindedness[一心一意],分出一部分時間關心別的東西,追術藝術就短少了這部分時間。當時你的話是特別針對某個問題而說的。我很了解(根據切身經驗),嚴格鑽研一門學術必須整個兒投身進去。藝術尤其音樂,反映現實是非常間接的,思想感情必須轉化為emotion[感情]才能在聲音中表達,而這一段醞釀過程,時間就很卡;一受外界打擾,醞釀過程即會延長,或竟中斷。音樂家特別需要集中(即所謂single-mindedness[一心一意]),原因即在于此。因為音樂是時間的藝術,表達的又是流動性最大的emotiOn[感情],往往稍縱即逝。不幸,生在二十世紀的人,頭腦裝滿了多多少少的東西,世界上又有多多少少東西時時刻刻逼你注意;人究竟是社會的動物,不能完全與世隔絕;與世隔絕的任何一種藝術家都不會有生命,不能引起群眾的共鳴。經常與社會接觸而仍然能保持頭腦冷靜,心情和平,同時能保持對藝術的新鮮感與專一的注意,的確是極不容易的事。你大概久已感覺到這一點。可是過去你似乎純用排斥外界的辦法(事實上你也做不到,因為你對人生對世界的感觸與苦悶還是很多很強烈),而沒頭沒腦的沉浸在藝術里,這不是很健康的作法。我屢屢提醒你,單靠音樂來培養音樂是有很大弊害的。以你的氣質而論,我覺得你需要多多跑到大自然中去,也需要不時欣賞造型藝術來調劑。假定你每個月郊游一次,上美術館一次,恐怕你不僅精神更愉快,更平衡,便是你的音樂表達也會更豐富,更有生命力,更有新面目出現。親愛的孩子,你無論如何應該試試看!哥哥去 你往海外預備拿什麼節目出去?協奏曲是哪幾支?恐怕VanWyck[範懷克]首先要考慮那邊群眾的好惡;我覺得考慮是應當的,但也不宜太遷就。最好還是挑自己最有把握的東西。真有吸引力的還是一個人的本色;而保持本色最多的當然是你理解最深的作品,在英國少有表演機會的Bartok[巴托克]、Prokofiev[普羅科菲埃夫]?等現代樂曲,是否上那邊去演出呢?前信提及Cuba[古巴]演出可能,還須鄭重考慮,我覺得應推遲一二年再說!暑假中最好結合工作與休息,不去遠地登台,一方面你們倆都需要松松,一方面你也好集中準備海外節目。七月中去不去維也納灌貝多芬第一、四?一問你的話望當場記在小本子上,或要彌拉寫下,待寫信時答復我們。一舉手之勞,我們的問題即有著落。 哥哥干 對終身伴侶的要求,正如對人生一切的要求一樣不能太苛。事情總有正反兩面︰追得你太迫切了,你覺得負擔重;追得不緊了,又覺得不夠熱烈。溫柔的人有時會顯得懦弱,剛強了又近乎專制。幻想多了未免不切實際,能干的管家太太又覺得俗氣。只有長處沒有短處的人在哪兒呢?世界上究竟有沒有十全十美的人或事物呢?撫躬自問,自己又完美到什麼程度呢?這一類的問題想必你考慮過不止一次。我覺得最主要的還是本質的善良,天性的溫厚,開闊的胸襟。有了這三樣,其他都可以逐漸培養;而且有了這三樣,將來即使遇到大大小小的風波也不致變成悲劇。做藝術家的妻子比做任何人的妻子都難;你要不預先明白這一點,即使你知道“責人太嚴,責己太寬”,也不容易學會明哲、體貼、容忍。只要能代你解決生活瑣事,同時對你的事業感到興趣就行,對學問的鑽研等等暫時不必期望過奢,還得看你們婚後的生活如何。眼前雙方先學習相互的尊重、諒解、寬容。
